Courtney + Erik on Style Me Pretty

In the bride’s words, “Finding true love is like finding a pearl in an oyster, both are rare and precious.” The details from this River Course wedding are so fun and I love how the couple used the oyster as a theme throughout. Brine and baguettes are a good pair! See the full post on Style Me Pretty here.

Dillard is a bride

It was a Friday the 13th about 15 years ago when I met Dillard after I rear ended her mom at a stoplight. I was only going a few miles an hour and aside from her rear bumper and my dignity, we were all fine. Since then, I’ve photographed Dillard’s deb portraits, gotten married on her mother’s birthday and she has babysat for my two boys. I have watched her grow into a gorgeous, humble professional with a glowing personality whose smile is so radiant it’s contagious. What a joy to see her in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown and ethereal veil. She was bursting with excitement just weeks before she walked down the aisle when we did her bridal portraits at her parent’s home downtown.

Jenna’s Portrait

Lowndes Grove shined like a jewel even in the rain once Jenna graced the house in her custom gown from Gregory Ellenburg. The lace detailing and delicate pearls on the bodice of her gown were simply extraordinary. So excited to finally share these pictures from August after she and Joe said their “I do’s” this past weekend in Greenville.

Corbin + Corley | Pawley’s Island

Corbin and Corley have such a unique and sweet love story. They live in Atlanta, where it all began…in high school to be exact. They were dates for junior prom way back in 2004 and brought along a picture to the wedding that proves some lucky people in fact DO improve with age. Corbin spent the summers at Pawley’s growing up, so coming back to this magical place was an obvious choice for their nuptials. Corbin and Corley’s event was understated, fresh-from-the-garden elegance and the lush setting was so overwhelming they didn’t need to add too many details. (And the bride’s got major style, she’s a blogger at bluedoorliving.com.) The gardens at Brookgreen and sculptures they house really set the tone for the day and the floral arrangements by Blossom were the icing on the cake. It was elegant and celebratory and refined but just rustic enough for the relaxed garden atmosphere. The forecast was for rain (it was pouring in Charleston when we left) but by the time we got to Pawley’s the clouds began to thin out. Because everybody was concerned about the weather they did a first look and portraits before the ceremony but Corley still looked like his heart was about to explode when he saw Corbin walking down the aisle with her dad. And by dinnertime the sun was poking out and the guests were able to pull up the sides of the tent. And Corley STILL looked like his heart was about to explode.

Lindsey + Marc | Kiawah Island, SC

It’s hard to go wrong when you have a wedding on Kiawah Island and when you pair that with these two love birds, it truly sets the tone for some heart-stirring moments. Lindsey hails from Georgia and Marc is originally from South Africa. They both have a mutual love of travel are also two of the most genuine, big hearted people that you will ever meet. Lindsey was voted “most likely to save a life” in high school, so it was fitting that shortly after their wedding details were finalized, she was sent to Africa with the CDC to do research on the ebola epidemic. A destination wedding that gathered loved ones from around the world was apropos. After exchanging vows in a ceremony officiated by the bride’s mother under threatening storm clouds and gusty winds, their reception paired Southern fare and South African wine (produced by none other than one of Marc’s groomsmen). There was also some questionable dancing that one can only assume is native to Marc’s original hometown, though it may have been something he picked up in college. Marc’s adorable daughter Olivia was the flower girl and it’s a toss up between her and the bride for the happiest girl there. And let’s take a moment to talk about those bouquets, the tiered wedding cake and Lindsey’s gown and how stunningly she wore it! It would seem that it’s no coincidence that it’s name is “Emerald” and it reminds you of just that in style and color…may it bring them good fortune in their marriage just as emeralds are believed to do. Their honeymoon destination (Belize) was a surprise to Lindsey but the safari themed getaway golf cart just might have tipped her off. Can’t wait to see where the rest of their journey takes this sweet family.

Kerri and Bert | Andrews, SC

Winter weddings are a breath of fresh air here in the South, especially when they are as charming and inviting as Kerri and Bert’s December celebration. Once the 12.13.14 date was nailed down for their wedding, they struggled to find a reception site large enough for all their friends and family, so they ended up having it at Kerri’s parent’s farm in Andrews, South Carolina. They were married at Bert’s family Church and then danced under the stars (and heaters) on a giant field that was tented and then lovingly decorated by family friend Michele Kirkland. The bride opted for a first look with her daddy that had him choke up a bit and a “first touch” with her groom that was equally emotional. Their minister led them in a short prayer just before the ceremony, which was held at sunset. Their seasonally appropriate hashtag was “The Merry Kellahans” and now they’re even merrier because they’re expecting a baby boy in the fall!!
Oh, did I mention some details that I loved from the reception, besides the fact that it was on her parent’s farm? (I have a soft spot for gatherings held at home.) How about all the elegant and subtle touches of Christmas? The guests signing their names on ornaments and leaving them on a tree? And they had a s’mores station?! You’re welcome for that visual, now how about those pictures to go with them…

Kathryn + Brian | Charleston, SC

You know that story that starts with, “They both lived in New York, he saw a beautiful girl from afar walking down the street, and he knew he had to meet her. He finds out that they both work in the same office (gasp) and now he has his chance…they end up falling in love, getting married and now they are starting their happily ever after.” This is that story. Seriously.
Kathryn and Brian live and met in New York, they both work in finance and were office mates long before they started dating. Of course Kathryn remembered notable “firsts” like their first kiss but it wasn’t until their wedding ceremony that she found out Brian remembered the first time he set eyes on her. He spotted her walking on the street in Midtown in the middle of the morning rush crowd, a tall blonde in a black dress, and much to his relief she wound up walking right into the same office as he did. 8 years later with the help of Cibi Events, they tied the knot at Lowndes Grove under a clear blue sky that made their bright color palate pop even more. All those deep pinks (even her nails!!) and the blue maids’ gowns from Amsale would leave anyone spellbound with delight. There was the sweetest first dance with Brian and his mom, a flower girl that almost stole the show, a naked cake with luscious cascading peonies and the bride playing an epic air guitar on her leg in 4 inch Jimmy Choo’s. TWICE. Quiana Parler has that effect on people. Finish with a sparkler sendoff in a Bentley = wedding perfection.

Lauren is a Mrs.

It’s such a treat to travel to Rockville. Out there the moss is just thicker, bugs are hungrier, salt air is heavier, the dirt seems to cling to your shoes a little more. It’s special, to say the least. But to photograph Lauren’s portrait on her fiance’s family property on the water was something totally different. Congratulations, Mrs. Cook. You are a stunning bride and that was the most fun I’ve had on a shoot in a long time.

I was fortunate to photograph a beautiful engagement session and wedding in Grand Isle, Vermont last month. It was held at the Grand Isle Lake House on Lake Champlain and I took in the views with my trusty travel companion and 2nd shooter, Alice Keeney. She was brave enough to test the waters one morning while I kept dry on the dock. The rolling hills smelled like fresh cut grass and parts of the island were so isolated you could only see corn and the occasional barn. Thank you, Farrell and Brian, for the opportunity to photograph your weekend and for the reminder that everything tastes better with maple syrup. More wedding photos to come soon! You can also see them all here.

Mike and Emilee in Garden and Gun

These two hold a special place in my heart. Seven years ago, Marc and I had our wedding reception at Mike’s amazing restaurant, FIG. We had our first date there, had dinner there moments after we got engaged, and pretty much ate there so often we joked that it was our dining room across the street. Emilee had just started waiting tables there and they didn’t want a rookie on the job so she didn’t work our wedding. Apparently Mike had far bigger plans for her, anyways. I was honored to photograph their Boone Hall Plantation wedding and all of it’s stunning details from Heather at Gathering Events. And fittingly, you can see some of the pictures in the August Food issue of Garden and Gun magazine, along with Caterer Callie White’s killer Crab Hush Puppie recipe. Many thanks to Alice Keeney for 2nd shooting.

I am a sucker for orchids, and Katie and Saket’s June wedding had bucketloads of them. The florals from Stems just about had me salivating at this one at the William Aiken House. PDN Top Knots Winners Gallery

Photo District News was the first photo magazine I subscribed to back in graduate school. It’s the best and most reliable source for industry news and it covers all types of photography, from commercial, fine art and editorial to photojournalism and documentary work. They have an annual “Top Knots” contest for wedding photography and I’m honored and thrilled to have one of my images included in the magazine this year. It was taken from a bridal portrait at Lowndes Grove and it was a runner up in the “details” category. The entire winners gallery can be seen on PDN’s website here. I love the movement and emotion in the grand prize winner’s shot!

I’m so thrilled to see Gillian and John’s elegant Cherokee Plantation wedding featured on the Brides blog today. Mike + Emilee Part I

This wedding was so chock full of amazing I think I’m going to have to break it into several posts. So let’s start with THE BRIDE. Her Jenny Packham dress, the venues (The Cottages on the Harbor and Boone Hall Plantation,) her hair, the flowers from Gathering Floral + Event Design…everything was beautiful and perfectly suited to her effervescent and generous personality. I was honored to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing woman, friend and mom. More to come soon!

Natalie and John Sherman on the Knot

A summery Southern stunner from Ashley at WED is the latest real wedding from South Carolina to be featured on theknot.com. John is a personal chef and the food at Lowndes Grove that August evening was so incredible it ALMOST upstaged the bride in her Monique Lhuillier. It was a perfect summer night and I couldn’t have asked to work with a more gracious and happy couple. Happy Anniversary Natalie and Sherm!

Caroline Buchan: the portraits

I met Caroline 4 years ago when I was shooting Emilie and Drue’s wedding at Lowndes Grove Plantation. Caroline was dating Emilie’s little brother, Ed. As of Saturday it’s finally official, Emilie is Caroline’s sister in law and how lucky am I to work with the same fantastic family TWICE! Caroline was a stunning bride…classic, radiant and elegant. Here is a snippet from her portrait session in January from the Thomas Bennet House. Go ahead, be jealous of her shoes.

Cameron + Jim

A little late afternoon rain shower didn’t interfere one bit with Cameron and Jim’s summer wedding perfection. Mount Pleasant Presbyterian’s rustic and beautiful portico provided the perfect shelter for some after ceremony pictures, and the rain moved through well before the couple’s rose petal sendoff from the Carolina Yacht Club. Cricket Newman did an incredible job of draping the club with floor to ceiling fabric and Jim Smeal’s towering cake was bespoke with lace detailing that mimicked Cameron’s dress to a tee. Oh, did I mention the monogrammed oak tree vodka luge? Yep, it was awesome.

Cameron and Jim, congratulations and it was my pleasure being part of your day!

Cameron + Jim’s Rehearsal Dinner

I met Cameron and her fantastic family four years ago when I photographed her older brother’s wedding. Needless to say I was thrilled when her mom called and asked me to shoot her upcoming wedding this summer. It was a treat to work with her and what a great surprise to see that her sister-in-law (and matron of honor) was 9 months pregnant! Cameron and Jim have been together for seven years, and the toasts at their rehearsal dinner were touching, sentimental and downright hilarious. Also, Jim’s speech gets my vote for best toast from a groom, ever. He got a standing ovation!

Grab a glass of bubbly and give yourself a solid chunk of time to indulge, it’s worth it! I’m honored to be included in the first issue. Lauren and Chad’s Middleton Place Plantation wedding is featured along with some of Sara York Grimshaw’s fabulous floral creations that I was lucky enough to have photographed.

Jenn + Mike

Jenn Grillo is not the kind of girl that runs from color. Her wedding was brimming with it, in an all caps kind of way. COLOR. EVERYWHERE. Eye popping flowers from Stems and a monogrammed gobo framed by woodsy chandeliers and draping under the tent at the ever fabulous William Aiken House added layer upon layer of bright, saturated COLOR. The lovelies at Southern Protocol orchestrated the evening’s events, Tanesha lent the bride a hand in rocking the birdcage veil, and Two 3 Ways got everybody out on the dance floor. So magical was the evening that guests were compelled to demonstrate the double worm. It was THAT AMAZING.

Congratulations Jenn and Mike! And thank you Charlotte for your extra help! See all 700 photos here.

Rebecca and Adam’s Rehearsal Dinner

Rebecca and Adam held their rehearsal dinner at the Cottage on the Creek and the event had a casual, southern, maritime feel to it. Seagulls were overhead all night and kayakers drifted by lazily as friends toasted the couple. I’m obsessed with Rebecca’s necklace, it was made by a jewelry designer friend of hers in Paris. Guests were treated to food by Granville’s, a yummy dessert table with sweets from Wildflour Pastry, and Stacey Fraunfelter of Red Letter Events coordinated the festivities.

Emma’s bridal portraits

Emma and BJ were married last weekend at Litchfield Plantation and we photographed the lovely bride there earlier this year for her formal portrait. The grounds of the plantation are beautiful but I also love the charming carriage house with its exposed brick walls, original hand painted wall coverings and delicate moldings. I only wish it was closer to Charleston!

Chris and Ashley Dorsey’s beautiful Lowndes Grove wedding is featured in the latest issue of Charleston Weddings alongside so many other gorgeous pages of wedding inspiration. From the brilliant minds at The Knot!

This week marks the end of engagement season, and the editors at The Knot have a couple of great tools for those of you now planning (or helping a friend plan) a wedding! I’m also thrilled to have some of my photographs included in these great publications, they’ve been in the works for such a long time it’s nice to revisit some of my favorite weddings that date back a few years. The Wedding Planner in a Box has cute flash cards you can stash in your bag and bring along when you meet with your vendors, and goes over everything from day-of emergency kits to what to tip your musicians. And the beautiful, photo filled Ultimate Wedding Lookbook is chock full of wedding inspiration goodness. I have been swooning over cakes and admiring the adventurous color palates all afternoon. Super excited to be a part of it!

A few of my pictures!

And the book:

A few shots from Theresa and Jeff’s beautiful Bray’s Island wedding:

The matchbook favors from Martha Kent and Michael’s sunny waterfront wedding are included alongside some other yellow goodies:

I’m loving on the turquoise and fire engine red palate, too. It features Alisa and Mike’s whimsical cake from their Charlestowne Landing wedding.

Happy planning!

Love is in the air

February’s arrival has me thinking about Valentine’s Day! As a tribute here are some of my all time favorite smooches.

January 26, 2011

Stacey + Jesse

Stacey and Jesse had a fabulous wedding at Charlestowne Landing this fall. They took advantage of the entire property, holding their ceremony under the oaks, cocktail hour on the on the lawn of the Legare Waring House, and then dinner and dancing followed at the fantastically modern Founders Hall. I loved the bright oranges and greens that were set off by the perfectly clear blue sky. The amazing flowers were courtesy of Sara York Grimshaw and all of the other details of the day were laid out by the brilliant team at WED.

Congratulations Stacey and Jesse! Thank you for sharing the day with me!

January 11, 2011

Elizabeth + Bill

Elizabeth and Bill were off to a great start for 2011, they tied the knot at 1pm on 1.1.11! It was an intimate day spent with their six children, Bill has three boys and Elizabeth has two girls and her youngest is a boy, Eli. Eli had the honor of walking his mom down the aisle and I’m pretty sure he was amped to have three new brothers at the end of the day. After Christy Loftin officiated a sweet little ceremony at St Luke’s chapel, the new family headed to the battery for some quick photos and then on to Peninsula Grill for supper. I’m 100% guilty of doing some cheesy family photos but I couldn’t resist the obvious Brady Bunch references, and the gang was totally willing to play along. Congratulations Elizabeth and Bill! I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend New Year’s Day.

Hardcover Press Printed books are here!

I love these albums! They feature thick, matte, lay-flat pages with no middle gutter. Full page spreads look amazing! The cover option shown here is a leather spine with cover photo but you also have the option of a full wraparound photo or full leather with 4×6 inset photo. It’s lighter than the traditional flush mount albums and a little less pricey, too. The 10×10 shown here features 113 photos on 48 pages and is $850, the same design in a Sequoia album would be $1115. Press Printed books are available in 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12. I’m so excited to have the great books to add to my album options!

December 10, 2010

Christy + Swen

Christy and I are old friends and I was so excited and humbled to shoot her wedding this fall. She’s an avid equestrian and held her ceremony and reception at Wide Awake Plantation out in the country in Hollywood, near where her horse is stabled. I recall her often begrudging the fact that she had to drive out there from town to frequently check up on her horse in inclement weather while we stayed inside where it was warm and there was red wine. But after making the drive out for her wedding I knew how special the area must be to her. The property is on the Stono River and has incredible views, grand oaks and a huge lawn that lends itself perfectly to a dance floor. The yummy cake was by D’lish, and catering was done by Dish and Design, but being the total multitasking overachiever that she is, Christy made the bouquets and boutonnieres herself. She incorporated a handful of Swen’s grandmother’s vintage buttons and used extra fabric from her mother’s wedding gown, which was newly altered for Christy to wear. The centerpieces were assembled by friends along with the photos and notecards that were strung around a tree trunk for guests to leave thoughts and wishes for the couple.

Congratulations Christy and Swen, I’m so happy for both of you!

November 26, 2010

Brooke + Chris

Brooke and Chris were married on October 30th and had some fabulous fall flourishes sprinkled throughout their gorgeous day. Also a SERIOUS candy station set up late night. The seasonal decor was dreamed up by the brilliant team at WED and executed with the help of floral designer extraordinaire Sara York Grimshaw. And the beautiful couple had beautiful weather to boot. Who doesn’t love crisp, cool evenings and fall weddings in the outdoors, especially with a backdrop like Cassique!

If you’d like you can see the entire event here. Congratulations Brooke and Chris and thank you for including me in your beautiful day!

October 26, 2010

Katie + Sam

Oh, how I love backyard weddings. I had one myself a few years ago and there’s something so intimate about having your closest friends and family over to celebrate nuptials on family ground. Katie and Sam had some pretty impressive grounds to celebrate on, too. They were married at Holy Spirit on John’s Island by their local bishop from back home and then held their reception at Katie’s grandparent’s nearby amazing, wooded waterfront property. Several of the property’s trees are registered with the National Register of Historic Trees. It was a hot day for September but there was just enough breeze to blow the thick moss hanging from branches that seemed to stretch on forever. The centerpieces were plucked from the garden and Katie’s cousins pitched in to ice the cupcakes, too.

Gately and Mikell are married!

After so much preparation, Gately and Mikell tied the knot over Labor Day weekend in a ceremony at St John the Baptist followed by a reception at the always lovely William Aiken House. Their bright, jewel toned palette made the usual eye-catching yellow background of house just quietly fade away. Color popped from every corner of the venue, from the grand magnolia to the specialty cocktails. Gately’s bridesmaids each wore a custom dress in varying shades of turquoise and fuchsia and carried soft pink bouquets from Lotus Flower. The ladies at WED pulled it all off and the Big Swing Ballroom Blasters made the night just fly by. Congratulations Gatley and Mikell and thank you for letting me capture your big day!

Gately Ryan’s bridal portrait

I shoot bridal portraits months ahead of the wedding date and it is so difficult not to post the photos once I’ve finished editing them! The bride usually shares them with a few friends and family but I have to wait until the wedding date passes to post anything. Gately and Mikell were married earlier this month and I’m so excited to finally post some of Gately’s portraits! We did these in the middle of June and somehow Gately kept her cool while I turned into a red hot pool of sweat. She’s a pro! Stay tuned for their fantastic wedding photos!

Ashley + Chris

100+ degree heat index, no problem with an air-conditioned tent! Want a big sendoff, why not have two! And while you’re at it, get a scrumptious cake to flawlessly match the Sideshow Press custom designed save-the-dates! Ashley and Chris had a spectacular summer affair at Lowndes Grove Plantation following their ceremony at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, all perfectly orchestrated and decorated by Kristin Newman Designs and Gathering Events. Ashley’s bridesmaids were classic in little black dresses with lace boleros and bright, eye-popping bouquets in orange and pink. It all looked fantastic against the sprawling grounds of the Plantation, and sounded great too thanks to Plane Jane. Love them. LOVE THEM.

Congratulations Ashley and Chris, and thank you so much for letting me capture your wonderful day! And you can see the entire event here.

Nicole and Jared

Nicole and Jared are not afraid of color and for this (and other reasons) I ADORE them. They had blissfully gorgeous weather for their July wedding and a slight breeze filled the air during their ceremony on the lawn at the Creek Club at Ion. Stacey Fraunfelter with Red Letter Events did the design and I was thrilled to meet Whitney of Branch Design Studio who did the bright and summery flowers.

Congratulations Nicole and Jared! Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your day!

Kirsten and Paul in the Knot Weddings Magazine!

Kirsten Hocker and Paul Mason had a spectacular wedding last October at Lowndes Grove Plantation. Once again, the ladies at WED teamed up with Dahlia Designs and knocked it out of the park with a beautiful tent filled with fall-hued sprays of yellow, orange, green and brown. Their colorful wedding is featured in the current Fall issue of The Knot Weddings Magazine! Congratulations Kirsten and Paul!

And I can’t resist throwing in a few more of my favorites…

Congratulations again to the happy couple!

Jaci and Jamie

I was so amped to post Jaci and Jamie’s grassy and gorgeous Ocean Course wedding that I put a picture of them up in my new blog header before I even finished editing the scores of pictures I took at their event. They went to school in Virginia so they already started out with bonus points in my book, but they are truly two of the nicest and most genuinely relaxed and happy people I’ve ever worked with. Throw in the talented mix of Dahlia Designs and WED, add a cool ocean breeze and it’s pretty much perfection.

I didn’t think these guys could get any cooler but then Jamie’s band took the stage and played Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the soles of her shoes.” Extra credit for that one.

In order to spare you from an overdose of fabulous I’ve held off on posting pictures of the band, you’ll have to check in to The Wedding Row next week for those. Hint: it involves a SEQUINED JUMPSUIT. Congratulations and THANK YOU Jaci and Jamie! (If you really can’t stand the anticipation you can see the entire event here.)

New Books!

I’m so in love with these new books, they make great sign in books for your reception and it’s the perfect way to display an engagement session. Both of these books are going to be used as sign in books so I’ve left a good bit of blank space in the layouts.

The books are available in 7×7, 8×10, 12×12 and 13×11 sizes. The smaller book is 8×10 and the larger one here is 12×12. You have the option of a dust jacket or wrap around image for your cover. Both come with your name on the spine and a photo on the back cover.

The 12×12 is a pretty good size, particularly when you consider my model/babysitter Harriett is 6 feet tall.

The small books also make great thank you gifts and parent’s albums, and all of the books can hold up to 160 pages. Yep, that’s a lot of pictures.

Jenn and Micah

Jenn and Micah live in Kentucky and planned a destination wedding for their friends and family at Wild Dunes. And what a small world. Shannon Barnes, one of my fantastic former assistants, now works at European Bridal in Cincinnati and sold Jenn her wedding dress! I totally fell for her gown and shoes, I love it when brides opt out of the traditional white kicks for something more saucy like the bronze leather strappy stilettos Jenn sported. And in another move that was slightly out of the ordinary, after Jenn’s Aunt Marjorie married Jenn and Micah she joined in the festivities and really rocked it out. WITH A BEER BOTTLE ON HER HEAD. That is definitely one human trick I’ve never seen before. She didn’t just walk around with a beer bottle on her head, she got DOWN. The other guests sported empty plastic beer bottles on headbands so they wouldn’t feel left out. Jenn’s family came prepared, apparently Aunt Marjorie has done this kind of thing before. I’ve been shooting weddings for 10 years and this is exactly why it will never get old.

See the entire event here. Congratulations Jenn and Micah!

Amanda and Ian

No wayward plume of volcanic ash was going to stand in between Amanda and Ian and their simply stunning event last month at the William Aiken House. The couple and much of their family and guests had to fly out of the UK during the chaotic weeks following that unpronounceable Icelandic volcano’s eruption. Maybe it was the luck of the Irish, but they made it, and were married under clear, sunny skies in a fantastic evening that played up both Amanda’s southern charm and Ian’s Irish roots. Event design is by the fabulous ladies at WED, flowers are by Sara at Dahlia Design, stationery by Rachel at Studio R.

Quite fittingly, they departed the festivities in a London Black Cab. And these pictures are just a taste!!! See more on The Wedding Row or the entire event here. Congratulations Amanda and Ian!

Nate and Barb

The uber talented Della MacNicholas (aka the brains behind the wedding row.com) featured this sunny springtime wedding on her blog yesterday! Congratulations Nate and Barb!

Sarah and Brian

I met with Sarah and her mother what seems like ages ago. Sarah and Brian live in New York, her parents live in Portland, and the wedding was going to be at the River Course on Kiawah. They had well over a year to plan and had every detail laid out perfectly. And then the venue burnt down. Luckily, they had already enlisted the help of Luke Wilson with Fleur Events and like a phoenix from the ashes, a tent rose from the ground at Cassique and it was white and glowing and filled with flowers and spectacular.

The tent was overflowing with white and green flowers and had two white lounge areas for weary guests who needed to rest their feet after rockin out to the Maxx. Conditions were so ideal even the rare and elusive double worm made an appearance. See the entire event here. Congratulations Sarah and Brian!

Katja and Ryan

Katja and Ryan had their ceremony and reception at the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall Plantation in April. Katja found her AMAZEBALLS dress through oncewed.com and got if for HALF PRICE Y’ALL. She got to spend all the money she saved on more fruity cocktails in Fiji where they honeymooned. So jealous.

Guests were directed to their tables with escort cards that were hung alongside childhood photos of the bride and groom. The display of sepia toned black and white prints looked great against the huge, rustic wooden barn doors.

And in spite of the fact that they were both novices, they demonstrated that they clearly knew how to exit a wedding in style. Congratulations Katja and Ryan!

Claire is married!

I taught photography at the College of Charleston a few years ago and aside from educational discounts on products I got from Apple, the I thought the best perk was meeting lots of potential interns. You always need free help, right? I was wrong. The best perk was getting a call from an old student who just got engaged. I had kept in touch with Claire Griffin because she worked for the Spoleto Festival after graduating, but nothing could prepare me for seeing her in a GOWN. A girly one with LACE. We did her bridal portrait at 14 George St, the incredibly restored home in downtown Charleston where the Spoleto offices are located. Claire also held her wedding reception at 14 George this past weekend. Bellissima! Best wishes, Claire!

Becky and Mark are married!

On a seasonably chilly February afternoon Becky and Mark were married at St Andrews Church in Mt. Pleasant and enjoyed a swanky reception downtown at Hibernian Hall. Courtesy of the talented ladies at A Charleston Bride, the front steps of Hibernian were all aglow in candlelight while pale lounges and florals graced the interior. Though the candles were impressive they could hardly compare with the glow on Becky’s face all evening!

RIP the River Course at Kiawah

Spring wedding season kicks off this weekend for me and what horrible timing for the lovely River Course clubhouse to burn to the ground. I suppose there’s never a good time to lose a building to fire but I know so many brides who have been planning their weddings from afar to only now be faced with the prospect of holding their quickly approaching wedding at a never before seen venue. Fortunately, Cassique is the alternative location to the River Course and I actually think it’s an upgrade. The building is newer, the grounds are more landscaped and the drive in and out of Kiawah is faster, which is a bonus for tired guests (and photographers!) at the end of an action packed day. Abby and Jay held their intimate event there in the Spring of 2007 and the while the event in its entirety can be seen here I thought I’d post a few snippets to give you an idea of the building and grounds. Event design props go to the talented Calder Clark of Blue Moon Events.

Jeanne-Marie and Steve

Jeanne-Marie and Steve were married on a brisk November afternoon at one of my favorite venues, the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall.
I had to ask Jeanne-Marie about her gown because it was so unique and it turns out it’s from Anthropologie. Didn’t think Anthropologie sold wedding gowns? They don’t. IT’S MADE FROM A SHOWER CURTAIN. Well, two shower curtains. A friend designed it for her. And it has to be one of my top 5 favorite gowns, ever. Gorgeous.
Congratulations Jeanne-Marie and Steve!

Martha Kent and Michael

Martha Kent and Michael were married in the fall of 2008 and had a beautifully bright and cheery yellow-hued reception at Lowndes Grove. Ooh Events did the design and set up cushy yellow lounges where guests enjoyed an amazing sunset and hand rolled cigars. Their wedding is in the current issue of Charleston Weddings Magazine.
Their wedding colors sparked my obsession with bright shoes. Martha Kent’s maids wore highlighter yellow strappy sandals that really popped against the green grass. Congratulations Martha Kent and Michael!

Kate and Ben in Modern Bride

Kate Brockhouse and Ben Pittard were married in September 2008 at Kate’s childhood home on the water in Charleston. Their fabulous wedding is published in this month’s issue of Modern Bride Magazine, which also, very sadly, happens to be the final issue of the magazine.

I’ve used this shot for ads all year, I absolutely love her gown, too!
The wedding was gorgeous and their first dance (Super Freak!) is still one of my favorites. It will be hard to top. Congratulations Kate and Ben!
