Joe and Jenna

Call me biased but I think Joe and Jenna Semsar look pretty adorable in the current issue of Charleston Magazine. Loved seeing their smiling faces in the announcements this month!

Dillard is a bride

It was a Friday the 13th about 15 years ago when I met Dillard after I rear ended her mom at a stoplight. I was only going a few miles an hour and aside from her rear bumper and my dignity, we were all fine. Since then, I’ve photographed Dillard’s deb portraits, gotten married on her mother’s birthday and she has babysat for my two boys. I have watched her grow into a gorgeous, humble professional with a glowing personality whose smile is so radiant it’s contagious. What a joy to see her in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown and ethereal veil. She was bursting with excitement just weeks before she walked down the aisle when we did her bridal portraits at her parent’s home downtown.

Jenna’s Portrait

Lowndes Grove shined like a jewel even in the rain once Jenna graced the house in her custom gown from Gregory Ellenburg. The lace detailing and delicate pearls on the bodice of her gown were simply extraordinary. So excited to finally share these pictures from August after she and Joe said their “I do’s” this past weekend in Greenville.

Lauren is a Mrs.

It’s such a treat to travel to Rockville. Out there the moss is just thicker, bugs are hungrier, salt air is heavier, the dirt seems to cling to your shoes a little more. It’s special, to say the least. But to photograph Lauren’s portrait on her fiance’s family property on the water was something totally different. Congratulations, Mrs. Cook. You are a stunning bride and that was the most fun I’ve had on a shoot in a long time.

Allison + Jesse + baby

If you’ve been a bridesmaid lately you’ve probably had the pleasure of meeting Allison Long. She owns and runs the Bella Bridesmaid Charleston store on John Street and has a phenomenal collection of dresses that I kind of just want to wear all the time. You know, Amsale, floor length, flowy gowns to take the kids to school, right? Totally normal. I am so excited to see her become a mama next month.

Ashton is on the move

This sweet thing is going to keep her mom and dad on the run for a while. She is one seriously determined little cutie. But when you have blue eyes and big cheeks like she does you pretty much get your way. And getting paid back with smiles is just perfect.

The Blessingers

Rachael Blessinger is the creative genius behind Studio R, a custom paper studio here in Charleston. I’m fortunate to work with her on some beautiful weddings and always love photographing the stunning invitation suites she designs for her lucky brides. She and her super energized husband also have three rambunctious, curious and adorable kids that I chased out in the blazing sun last month. We hit the marsh at low tide and found fiddler crabs and snails and ran through grass that was taller than her six year old while we were looking for shade. They were all rewarded with ice cream for dinner so it was pretty much a perfect summer afternoon.

Ashley’s Maternity Session at Boone Hall

Beautiful Ashley is going to be a mama next month. I photographed her wedding two years ago and I could not be more excited to witness the next chapter in her life. Can’t wait to meet the newest member of her family! And I’m sorry, Ashley, but I’m really hoping your sweet little bundle will be a week late so I can share a birthday with her.

Family Time

I snuck away to Rockville last month for a little hiatus from weddings. The town of Rockville, SC has three dirt roads, two churches and a Yacht Club. Though I was temped to just sit on the porch and watch the tide ebb and flow, that’s impossible with three boys in the house. So we got dirty, went for boat rides, picked strawberries and taught Mason how to ride a bike. And just when I thought my fiery red-headed nephew couldn’t get any cuter, he lost his two front teeth.

Brittany’s Bridal Portrait at Boone Hall Plantation

There is this magical and ephemeral week at Boone Hall when both the cotton and poppy fields are doing what they do best. I’m so lucky I had the chance to do Brittany’s portrait there in April.

Dave and Shade are world travelers. I’m so happy they were in Charleston for their 2nd anniversary earlier this month. There’s nothing like catching up with old friends on the water on a gorgeous, salty, Sunday afternoon. On a breathtakingly beautiful yacht. Happy Anniversary, Dave and Shade. Thank you for sharing the evening and your anniversary bubbly with us.

Janie’s Bridal Portrait on Kiawah

I love that BOTH of Janie’s parents came along to her bridal session on Kiawah in March. Mom held the flowers and Dad helped pour champagne. And they both gave me their blessing when I asked Janie to walk out in to a the middle of a grassy field. Fear not, neither lace nor Jimmy Choos were hurt during the shoot.

Valentine’s Day Photo Booth

I wanted to say a big “THANK YOU” to all of the families who purchased pictures from the O’Quinn school father/daughter Valentine’s Day Dance photo booth! Proceeds from all of the sales go towards purchasing sun shades for the playground so it’s not a cook top this summer. We are $200 closer than we were last month! If you haven’t bought your pictures yet you can get them here.

Margaret is Twenty One

I met Margaret’s mother, author Kieran Kramer, while photographing her cousin’s wedding in 2010. Margaret’s grandparents built an amazing home on the Stono River and the family has celebrated special occasions there for three generations now. Kieran and her 4 siblings lived in a trailer on the property for years while the house was being built. I would sleep in a garden shed if I could take in those views of the historic, towering oaks and river. Margaret just celebrated her 21st birthday and her mom invited me out to the house again to take her portraits. I could have stayed all day listening to their stories and hearing Margaret talk about her plans. Oh to be 21, smart and gorgeous. Happy Birthday, Margaret!

Mike + Emilee Part I

This wedding was so chock full of amazing I think I’m going to have to break it into several posts. So let’s start with THE BRIDE. Her Jenny Packham dress, the venues (The Cottages on the Harbor and Boone Hall Plantation,) her hair, the flowers from Gathering Floral + Event Design…everything was beautiful and perfectly suited to her effervescent and generous personality. I was honored to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing woman, friend and mom. More to come soon!

Caroline Buchan: the portraits

I met Caroline 4 years ago when I was shooting Emilie and Drue’s wedding at Lowndes Grove Plantation. Caroline was dating Emilie’s little brother, Ed. As of Saturday it’s finally official, Emilie is Caroline’s sister in law and how lucky am I to work with the same fantastic family TWICE! Caroline was a stunning bride…classic, radiant and elegant. Here is a snippet from her portrait session in January from the Thomas Bennet House. Go ahead, be jealous of her shoes.

Stay tuned for shots from their awesome wedding weekend at DeBordieu!

Ansley Sade’s Bridal Portraits

I have been super excited to post these and now I’m even more excited to get the film back from Ansley’s and Derek’s wedding last night! You make a beautiful bride, Ansley! Your happiness just radiates and I’m so happy for the two of you.

A Peacock in White

Mary Helen Peacock looked after Marcus his first year of life and he was one lucky little boy to have her around. She moved on to another job before I had Mason but she still played a big role in Marcus’s life, bringing him to the hospital when Mason was one day old and showering him with attention while I was distracted by a new tiny set of fingers and toes. I’m pretty sure she’s the reason Marcus prefers blondes. I’m getting the day off for her wedding, Marcus is the ring bearer and I’m so proud and nervous and excited to watch him walk down the aisle in front of her. The wedding photography will be in the hands of the oh so talented Virgil Bunao, but I did have the honor of doing her bridal portrait at the Thomas Bennet House. The verdict is in, LACE IS GOOD.

Catching up with the DeWolfs

Here are Sara and Ben in May 2008:

And here they are today:

I had the pleasure of catching up with them and meeting their sweet little girl last week. She’s not even two and is SERIOUSLY loaded up with personality!

Thank you, Sara and Ben, for inviting me over. Congratulations and I can’t wait to meet your next pumpkin!

Linda’s Bridal Portrait

Oh, how I have been DYING to post these pictures from July at the Legare Waring House. Linda was married last week in a beautiful ceremony rich with tradition and I’m so excited to finally share these bridal portraits! I don’t get out to Charlestowne Landing that often so it’s a treat when I do, the soft palate used in the house lends itself perfectly for bridal portraits.

March 30, 2012

Anna Perkins

Anna and Chett had a beautiful wedding last weekend at the Carolina Yacht Club, so I’m happy to finally post some of Anna’s portraits from February. It’s hard for me to keep anything under wraps for too long, especially a portrait session at Lowndes Grove! I loved Anna’s long veil, she looked so elegant and and I’m all about the V neck gown this season, too.

The Whitneys: Beach session

My adorable nephew attends Sundrops Montessori and I donated a portrait session to their Holiday auction last year. The Whitney family bought the auction item and opted to do their pictures on the beach. It was one of those humid, summer days where it looked like the sky was about to open up and drop torrential amounts of rain but it never did. The clouds were thick, fluffy and grey and the lighting was spot on perfect for an afternoon at the beach.

September 19, 2011

Jen Donchez at Cassique

Ooh la la! I have been itching to post this portrait for weeks but I had to wait to spill the beans until the lovely bride was married this month. Here are a few of my favorites, be sure to hop on over to The Wedding Row to see more of Jen’s bridal portraits!

July 28, 2011

Emilie Neyle

Emilie is hands down a total stunner, and she’s one of those women that has no idea how gorgeous she is. She usually runs from a mascara wand like it was steamed okra. I had so much fun working with her at Boone Hall for her bridal portrait and her gown from the Gown Boutique is one of my favorites!

June 14, 2011

Emma’s bridal portraits

Emma and BJ were married last weekend at Litchfield Plantation and we photographed the lovely bride there earlier this year for her formal portrait. The grounds of the plantation are beautiful but I also love the charming carriage house with its exposed brick walls, original hand painted wall coverings and delicate moldings. I only wish it was closer to Charleston!

June 3, 2011

Rachel and Chad are getting married

Rachel and Chad are so in love!!! I hardly had to ask and they just ran out to the beach together and romped around like giddy teenagers.

Congratulations you two lovebirds. I had a fantastic time chasing after you on the beach!

May 22, 2011

Courtney Swan

I photographed Courtney’s portraits in March and I’m so excited to finally post them. She graduated from law school last weekend and a friend shot her wedding yesterday, I hope it was a fantastic event! Congratulations Courtney, I loved meeting you and having the opportunity to photograph you in such an amazing setting!

Hello, Henry!

Leave it to Hannah and Matt Alexander to achieve baby perfection. Henry made his debut on December 5th and he’s figured out how to charm the ladies in no time. I fell under his spell this morning when he woke up from his nap all smiles and sunshine and hammed it right up for me. Total. Baby. Perfection.

February 9, 2011

Snakes, Snails and Puppy Dog Tails

It’s always a treat to check in annually with my friend Ellen’s boys, Luke and Jack. They’re 18 months apart and bursting with energy. We romped around Hampton Park recently and they entertained me to no end. What cracked me up the most was Jack, the youngest, was constantly poking, teasing, or tackling Luke. I did the same thing to my big brother ages ago just to see his temper flare up but he’s 7 years my senior so the outcome wasn’t nearly as cute.

Love is in the air

February’s arrival has me thinking about Valentine’s Day! As a tribute here are some of my all time favorite smooches.

December 30, 2010

Kelley’s Bridal Portrait

Kelley was a stunning bride and I was thrilled to shoot her bridal portrait recently at Lowndes Grove. She wore her grandmother’s gown which was also worn by her mother almost 30 years ago. I’m always amazed that a gown can be preserved and altered and then shared with later generations, but that may just be because my own wedding dress has red wine stains all over it. Good thing I have boys, I guess. Kelley’s gown was altered to be sleeveless but she had an elegant lace bolero made to cover her arms during the ceremony. Add some killer blue Louboutins, a bouquet blooming with roses and peonies, and it makes for an exceptionally elegant bride.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday weekend! Drink some eggnog for me.

Sugar and spice and everything nice

My darling niece popped by last week for a quick visit. I still find it hard to believe I’m related to somebody so cute and blonde.

Gately Ryan’s bridal portrait

I shoot bridal portraits months ahead of the wedding date and it is so difficult not to post the photos once I’ve finished editing them! The bride usually shares them with a few friends and family but I have to wait until the wedding date passes to post anything. Gately and Mikell were married earlier this month and I’m so excited to finally post some of Gately’s portraits! We did these in the middle of June and somehow Gately kept her cool while I turned into a red hot pool of sweat. She’s a pro! Stay tuned for their fantastic wedding photos!

August 27, 2010

Meet Coleman

I spent a sticky August afternoon at my friend Heather’s fantastic downtown apartment frolicking with her 15 month old son Coleman. Coleman is just 6 months older than little Marcus and I’m amazed (and somewhat scared) of how much he can do on his own. Open doors. Slide bolted locks. Climb up on the bed. Get down off the bed. And run, run, run.

He’s also learned that good things come in little blue boxes. VERY important.

Coleman still sleeps in his crib but he has a big boy bed in his room that he adores playing on. (Note to self: overstuffed pillows can provide toddlers with endless entertainment.)

Meanwhile, Coleman provides the entertainment for Rosebud.

I went home and did the same thing. Thanks for a fun afternoon, Coleman!

June 18, 2010

New Books!

I’m so in love with these new books, they make great sign in books for your reception and it’s the perfect way to display an engagement session. Both of these books are going to be used as sign in books so I’ve left a good bit of blank space in the layouts.

The books are available in 7×7, 8×10, 12×12 and 13×11 sizes. The smaller book is 8×10 and the larger one here is 12×12. You have the option of a dust jacket or wrap around image for your cover. Both come with your name on the spine and a photo on the back cover.

The 12×12 is a pretty good size, particularly when you consider my model/babysitter Harriett is 6 feet tall.

The small books also make great thank you gifts and parent’s albums, and all of the books can hold up to 160 pages. Yep, that’s a lot of pictures.

May 31, 2010

Happy Memorial Day!

April 21, 2010

Gately and Mikell are engaged!

I spent another lovely afternoon this month at Boone Hall Plantation shooting Gately and Mikell’s engagement photos. All of the azaleas were in full bloom and it was delightfully brisk considering the fact that we’re well into spring down here. And I’ve fallen head over heels for their sweet dog Harlow, who was surely in heaven bounding through the tall grass and meandering down oak alley like it was her own backyard.

April 12, 2010

Claire is married!

I taught photography at the College of Charleston a few years ago and aside from educational discounts on products I got from Apple, the I thought the best perk was meeting lots of potential interns. You always need free help, right? I was wrong. The best perk was getting a call from an old student who just got engaged. I had kept in touch with Claire Griffin because she worked for the Spoleto Festival after graduating, but nothing could prepare me for seeing her in a GOWN. A girly one with LACE. We did her bridal portrait at 14 George St, the incredibly restored home in downtown Charleston where the Spoleto offices are located. Claire also held her wedding reception at 14 George this past weekend. Bellissima! Best wishes, Claire!

February 18, 2010

Ashley and Chris are engaged!

Ashley and Chris braved the cold this Saturday to shoot some engagement photos at Waterfront Park. Chris proposed on the swings so they were all sweet and nostalgic about the location in spite of the wind and bitter temperatures. And when would they ever have the chance to play with a 5 foot snowman in Charleston again?
After an hour or so I couldn’t feel my fingers so we popped in to Fleet Landing to warm up. And being that Valentine’s Day was Sunday it was only appropriate that Chris picked up a palmetto rose for Ashley along the way. Congratulations Ashley and Chris, can’t wait for the big day this summer!

February 1, 2010

Giddyup

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing Cal Fairfield, a precocious and leggy 8 week old who is solely responsible for reshaping the growth chart curve. Seriously, he’s as big as my 4 month old. When he finally woke up his mom Catherine dressed him in a sweet little linen outfit, I love the little buttons and collar.

Quick change into a cute Western style number and he suddenly looked like a little man.
The hat was a little cumbersome so we took it off for a few shots. Here he’s all, “Had a rough day, can you get me a cold one?”

Cal is such a lamb chop and a really strong little guy. When they left I think he went for a quick jog over the Cooper River Bridge.
