Vermont

I was fortunate to photograph a beautiful engagement session and wedding in Grand Isle, Vermont last month. It was held at the Grand Isle Lake House on Lake Champlain and I took in the views with my trusty travel companion and 2nd shooter, Alice Keeney. She was brave enough to test the waters one morning while I kept dry on the dock. The rolling hills smelled like fresh cut grass and parts of the island were so isolated you could only see corn and the occasional barn. Thank you, Farrell and Brian, for the opportunity to photograph your weekend and for the reminder that everything tastes better with maple syrup. More wedding photos to come soon! You can also see them all here.

Family Time

I snuck away to Rockville last month for a little hiatus from weddings. The town of Rockville, SC has three dirt roads, two churches and a Yacht Club. Though I was temped to just sit on the porch and watch the tide ebb and flow, that’s impossible with three boys in the house. So we got dirty, went for boat rides, picked strawberries and taught Mason how to ride a bike. And just when I thought my fiery red-headed nephew couldn’t get any cuter, he lost his two front teeth.

Valentine’s Day Photo Booth

I wanted to say a big “THANK YOU” to all of the families who purchased pictures from the O’Quinn school father/daughter Valentine’s Day Dance photo booth! Proceeds from all of the sales go towards purchasing sun shades for the playground so it’s not a cook top this summer. We are $200 closer than we were last month! If you haven’t bought your pictures yet you can get them here.

Happy Valentines Day

Hope your day was filled with joy and sealed with a kiss!

Settings: The Local Palate

It’s always a treat to work with wedding designers on an editorial project. Especially when it involves Ellen Robinson from WED and her sweet Jack Russell, Cooper! Cooper was nearby during every shot and she makes her modeling debut in the magazine. Lounging behind the bar, naturally.

A Peacock in White

Mary Helen Peacock looked after Marcus his first year of life and he was one lucky little boy to have her around. She moved on to another job before I had Mason but she still played a big role in Marcus’s life, bringing him to the hospital when Mason was one day old and showering him with attention while I was distracted by a new tiny set of fingers and toes. I’m pretty sure she’s the reason Marcus prefers blondes. I’m getting the day off for her wedding, Marcus is the ring bearer and I’m so proud and nervous and excited to watch him walk down the aisle in front of her. The wedding photography will be in the hands of the oh so talented Virgil Bunao, but I did have the honor of doing her bridal portrait at the Thomas Bennet House. The verdict is in, LACE IS GOOD.

The First day of School

I’ve been looking forward to this day all summer. I dropped the boys off at 8.45 and went for a run (first one since NOVEMBER) and had a chance to clear my head. It’s Marcus’s 2nd year at St. Phillip’s and he was really looking forward to seeing old friends, Mason was cheerful right alongside him until I dropped him in a strange classroom without his brother and headed out the door. He started to cry, as did I, and I made a run for it. I’m sure the waterworks lasted only a minute and I thought if I lingered it would just prolong the drama. And now I’m experiencing the exact opposite feeling, staring at the clock and I can’t wait to pick them up, to see the excitement in their eyes and hear all about their big morning.

Happy 2012!

How time flies. This is the year I probably have to stop taking pictures of Marcus naked, so I’m going to squeeze a few more in while I can.

The Big Apple

Last weekend I left the babies at home for three nights to spend some time in the city. I was staring so much at other people’s children they probably thought I was a pedophile but I just missed the boys so much I couldn’t help myself. In spite of feeling like I was traveling without my right hand, Marc and I had a great trip, we explored some new places, ate (way too much) fabulous food and caught up with old friends. The weather was fantastic and I shot a pile of film for a new project. And for once, I was finally on the side of the airplane with the good view.

Now I don’t have to swim with sharks

Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to attend the Engage:11 Grand Cayman conference. The Engage conferences are ongoing luxury wedding summits that bring together the best and most influential minds in the wedding industry in a non competitive environment. I had wanted to attend one for years but I was always about to have or had just had a baby every time they were scheduled. I’m so glad I was able to attend this year, though I came home to a daunting pile of emails, editing and a ridiculous bill from AT&T, the experience I had was unforgettable. I was able to hear Carley Roney, Sylvia Winestock, Bryan Rafanelli, Brian and Andy Marcus, Donna Von Breuning and Barbara Corcoran speak, just to name a few. The days were packed full of presentations but we did get a break to sail a catamaran out to a shelf in the ocean where you can swim with stingrays and I got to touch the silky underbelly of a HUGE ray. Very cool.

Can’t wait until the next one!

Last days of summer

He’s been exercising more, can you tell?

Mama’s little helper

When Marcus isn’t pulling every item out of every drawer in the house or insisting on painting the kitchen floor with his lunch, he can be pretty helpful.

Chubs

Hi, I’m Mason. I’m 14 weeks old. I like Leos, milk, balloons and warm baths. I can also stash a ham under the fat rolls in my neck.

the butt paste incident

After putting Mason in the stroller this morning, I walked back into Marcus’s room and found him on top of the changing table, finger painting with butt paste.

My Nikon was downstairs but I figured what the hell, I already had a pretty decent mess to clean up so I might as well just shut him back in there for another minute and get some good pictures. I love what he did with his hair in the meantime.

When I explained that there would be no walk this morning because we had to clean up, he immediately pitched in with the purell.

He’s such a team player. It’s a shame he’s going barefoot for the rest of the summer.

May 20, 2011

Almost, but not quite.

Today we learned that some brushes don’t go in your hair.

On mother’s day

Marcus and Mason have pretty similar names, so to simplify things we’ve decided to just go with “Thing One” and “Thing Two.” Next up, blue wigs.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, and a special thank you to Mrs. Shumway for the great detective work!

Spring color

Now that the carpet of oak pollen has been washed away from our yard I’ve been able to spend some time in it without turning into a giant, walking hive. Our garden isn’t too terribly colorful with flowers right now but some of the trees looked incredible this morning against the blue sky.

I love the texture of this lace leaf Japanese maple, especially against the wall of fig ivy.

And even though the camelias have already bloomed it makes me happy to walk out the door every morning and see this:

The life of the party

Mason just hit the six week mark and by my estimate I think he’s been awake for about 45 minutes since he was born. I had no idea babies could sleep so much because little Marc’s nickname was the “sleep slayer” for the longest time. He saw a nap coming and ran in the other direction. Fast. I caught a few rare glimpses of Mason’s eyes this afternoon trying to get some pictures of him with my mom. It was short-lived but I’m not giving up hope just yet, and in the meantime I may be biased but I think he’s pretty cute even when he’s passed out cold.

Welcome aboard Mason Halsey!

This has been an exciting month here, we welcomed a new little bundle on March 4th! Mason Halsey Durlach weighed in at 7lbs 6oz and has been packing on poundage like it’s been his job for the last 19 days. It’s as if he knows he needs to catch up with Marcus, who is completely amped to have another little guy in the house. Marcus is only 17 months old and it’s been incredible to see his transformation from baby to big brother. He’s so concerned whenever Mason cries and loves to hold his tiny hands and kiss his peach fuzzy head. I hope he can keep it up for another 20 years.

Spring Fever

It was 75 degrees here yesterday so we took advantage of the sunshine and got messy outside. I’m ready for spring!

Happy Holidays!

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday weekend! Drink some eggnog for me.

Baby proof, for now.

Little Marcus is an energetic, crafty, curious toddler. (Translation: Nothing in our home is safe from his path of destruction unless it is securely affixed to a wall.) This past week he discovered tools, a remarkable feat which now permits him the opportunity to knock objects off high surfaces which were previously out of reach. He’ll grab a wooden spoon or a roll of wrapping paper and swing it like a sword, yielding a bounty of fruit, books or iPhones which we naively thought were safe and unreachable at counter height. Good thing we’re minimalists without a lot of knick knacks. So rather than put a hideous gate around a Christmas tree this year we opted for a rosemary topiary table topper. Our living room doesn’t have the magical twinkle I love so much this time of year but (at least for the meantime) I don’t have to worry about him knocking this one over and hauling it around like he’s Paul Bunyan.

Sugar and spice and everything nice

My darling niece popped by last week for a quick visit. I still find it hard to believe I’m related to somebody so cute and blonde.

October 29, 2010

Happy Halloween!

It’s unfortunate that it’s 70 degrees outside, because Marcus is going to be wearing this outfit all weekend. It’s so cute I just can’t stand to take him out of it.

May 31, 2010

Happy Memorial Day!

Old dogs are the best

In spite of his smell, his groaning like an old man at 3 AM, and his frequent four digit vet bills, Sur is a pup extraordinaire. Little Marc can pull, poke, jab and prod and he’s simply content to lay there and soak up the attention along with whatever food bits may be left on the baby’s limbs.

Hard to believe I was ever a cat person.

New Holga photos for Parkshore

I finally got around to printing a few of the great Holga shots I took in London last spring, and they’re going up in the newly renovated lobby of Parkshore Center along with a few other older pieces taken in New York and Paris.

The last photo of the Gherkin isn’t going up in the lobby because the architect thought it was a little too weird alongside the others. But I love it. Especially juxtaposed towering over the French neoclassical building in the foreground. And every time I look at it I crave country pate and cornichons.

Let it snow!

Last Friday evening we had the first significant snow accumulation in Charleston since 1989. I think the official measurement downtown was one inch (woo hoo!) but my friend Kristiana said they had upwards of 6 inches out in the boonies where she lives past Summerville. It was beautiful coming down in Ansonborough in the glow of the streetlights. It turned our walkway into a lovely but slushy mess and killed off my last two jade plants that survived our frigid January.
By dawn on Saturday it was already melting away on the street but little Marc had a chance to play in it before it disappeared entirely. Incidentally, the weather had the immediate effect of turning the majority of snow-starved Charlestonians into giddy, childlike fools, myself included.

Marcus Russell Durlach V

Some of you may still be scarred from seeing my ENORMOUS preggo belly in September, the good news is that all the bloat and misery was worth it!! Marcus Russell Durlach V was born September 21st 2009 and has been filling our lives with giggles and warmth ever since.

Hard to believe he’s only 3 months old, he’s already become an old pro at posing for the camera.
And I think he’s made a certain dog a little jealous.

another blog is born!

Just in case there isn’t enough information out there for you, here’s another blog to quell your insatiable appetite for silly banter and glimpses into complete stranger’s lives! Rejoice! I’ll also be posting some favorite shots from recent weddings and keep you current on new products like albums and package updates. I may also occasionally digress on to topics such as lip gloss and my dog, but I’ll try to keep those to a minimum. Does this mean I’ll probably spend less time updating marnipictures.com? Absolutely! But until I get the blog up and running be sure to check out my recent work there: www.marnipictures.com
